New Year, New Goals – 2022
It’s never too late to do your yearly goal review. For me, the holidays and New Years time were absolutely nuts this year. Between COVID concerns, travel, and moving into a new home, it has taken me a while to review 2021 goals and work on my 2022 goals.
I wanted to take the time to share my goals with everyone for multiple reasons. Selfishly, I’m sharing with you because I want to be held accountable. If I fail to achieve them, I want support to figure out what I did/didn’t do to achieve them. If I succeed in achieving them, I want recognition to reinforce these actions.
I also wanted to share with you two different ways I have set my 2022 goals. I categorize them by different parts of my life as well as set them as either threshold goals or habitual goals.
2021 Goals:
- 12 books = 6 books
- Honeymoon/Party = party
- Say prayers before bed = 60% of time
- 6 pack abs = 10.4% body fat at lowest
- 2 syndications = started blog
- Net worth > $XXX = Done
- Trip with closest friends = Done
- See my nephew every month = Done
In my first ever attempt to make yearly goals, some goals were set up to help me become a better person. Then there were some unrealistic goals.
In terms of my books, 6 pack abs, and 2 syndications goals, I think these were a bit of a stretch. I have never been a big reader in my life. I also was not anywhere close to 6 pack abs nor did I have the capital to invest in 2 real estate syndications. Sum it up to the fact I did not do enough research before making these goals.
For my 2022 goals, I have done a bit more research and put more thought into how to automate pieces of my life as well as take them to the next level. Take note of how I broke them into areas I want to focus on as well as whether they are a threshold goal or a goal that is designed to create a new habit.
2022 Goals:
House
- Automate all maintenance (habitual)
Blog
- Average 5,000 page views per month (threshold)
- Monetize $365 per year (threshold)
- 1 post per week (habitual)
- Reach out to 5 podcasts per month (habitual)
Career
- Promotion/Pay Raise(threshold)
- Enable people I manage to achieve their goals (habitual)
Wife
- Take more vacations (habitual)
- Fun day dates each month (habitual)
Personal
- Read 100 pages per month (habitual)
- Workout average 4 days per week (habitual)
- Save 50% take-home pay (habitual)
What I found over the past year is that habitual goals create better outcomes in my life over the long run. I also tend to stick with things longer knowing that there isn’t a point in time that I can relapse. These are things that I want to last a lifetime, not just a year.
Do threshold or habitual goals work better for you?
